"Creating to inspire is my overall aim. When I paint I often reference the inner battle between my demons and my conscious and channel that through the figures I create, colors I choose, and the lyrics and words I write on the canvas to convey my feelings in that moment. I'm forever battling: battling conditioning, battling social norms, and battling for custody of my inner child. Most of my paintings embody that fight. Samoe son is my art name. When I started painting people called me samo because I reminded them of Basquiat and it began to stick...I adapted the nickname to pay homage to him and added the son at the end so people wouldn't feel like I was trying to steal his nickname." - Byron Brown II
